Truth or Dare, also known as Blumhouse's Truth or Dare,[3] is a 2018 American supernatural horror film directed and co-written (alongside Michael Reisz, Jillian Jacobs, and Chris Roach) by Jeff Wadlow. The film stars Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Hayden Szeto, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Landon Liboiron as a group of college students who play a game of truth or dare while on vacation in Mexico, only to realize it has deadly consequences if they don't follow through on their obligations. Jason Blum produced through his Blumhouse Productions banner, and Universal Pictures distributed the film.
Released in theaters on Friday, April 13, 2018, the film received mostly negative reviews from critics, who said it was "neither inventive nor scary enough to set itself apart from the decades of dreary slashers that came before it."[4] Regardless, the film was a box office success, grossing $95 million worldwide against its $3.5 million production budget.
Olivia Barron is a college senior who is seen by others as a good girl who always puts others' needs before her own. During her last spring break, although she initially plans to build houses with Habitat for Humanity, her best friend Markie Cameron convinces her to come to Mexico with their friends instead. At a bar, Olivia meets a man named Carter who invites them to go drinking at an abandoned church. There, Carter suggests they play truth or dare. During the game, their friend Tyson Curran reveals that Olivia has a secret crush on Lucas Moreno, Markie's boyfriend, which she denies. Carter admits that he tricked them into playing a supernatural version of the game and warns them to do whatever the game asks or they will be killed.
Back at school, Olivia sees hallucinations calling on her to pick truth or dare. She picks "truth" and blurts out that Markie has been serially unfaithful to Lucas. The friends learn that Ronnie, another friend, was forced to kill himself after failing to complete a dare. Lucas picks "truth" and admits that he has always had feelings for Olivia. Markie is forced to break Olivia's hand while their closeted friend Brad Chang is forced to admit to his father that he is gay.
Brad is dared to threaten his father with a gun. As he does so, he is shot and killed by an approaching officer. Olivia learns that Carter and Sam are the same person. She is dared to speak the truth and tells Markie that the night Markie's father killed himself, he had sexually assaulted Olivia and she had told him that Markie would be better off if he was dead. Though at first angry and hurt, Markie, after contemplating suicide with her father's handgun, forgives her friend, and tells her it is not her fault as her father had tried to kill himself before.
Olivia, Markie, and Lucas find Sam and force him back to the ruins of the church. As Sam goes through the ritual to trap Calux, Lucas is dared to kill either Olivia or Markie. When he refuses, Calux possesses him and forces him to kill himself after killing Sam so that the latter cannot complete the ritual. When Markie's turn comes, Olivia tells her to choose dare, then refuse to complete it. Calux possesses Markie, at which point Olivia forces Calux into the game by asking him to pick truth or dare. The demon is forced to tell the truth that there is no way they can make it out of the game alive because Sam is dead. They'll die unless they add more people to delay their next turn.
The film was initially set for release on April 27, 2018. But in January 2018, the date was moved up two weeks and premiered on April 13, 2018.[11] The official trailer for the film was released on January 3, 2018.[12]
In April 2018, Jeff Wadlow discussed ideas of a sequel, stating, "If the movie is a success and I'm asked to come up with other good ideas, there are other stories that could be told through the filter of a supernatural game of truth or dare."[28]
Time has chosen a group of four journalists and a news organization as its Person of the Year for 2018, hailing them for "taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths" in what the magazine called a "war on truth."

In 2016, the Oxford Dictionary famously chose post-truth as its word of the year. Its definition, separating objectivity from subjectivity, rationality from emotions, seemed, however, flawed by design. At least since Gregory Bateson (1967) joined the pioneer cyberneticists in the 1940s, anthropologists have explored innovative analytical paths for working transversally to these and other divides, such as between individual and society, or freedom and control. I claim this heritage to propose a cybernetic explanation for the contemporary constellation linking post-truth to digital media, existing neoliberalism and conservative populisms, keeping as a touchstone my current research on pro-Bolsonaro digital networks (Cesarino 2019).
Remarkable as this was, there was more to it than a digital boost on a classic populist strategy. Digital populism (Cesarino 2019) showed, from a structural perspective, multiple echoes with what others have labeled neoliberalism, post-truth, and the digital structures underlying it (Comaroff and Comaroff 2000; Harsin 2015; Mirowski 2019). As I turned to the question of post-truth, I approached it as Laclau (2005) had done for populism and, before him, Claude Lévi-Strauss (1964) for totemism: what patterns underlie the heterogeneity of phenomena currently being put under the umbrella of post-truth? What do fake news, flat-earth communities, virtual rumors, character assassination campaigns, anti-vaccine movements, and outrageous presidential statements have in common?
The difficulty of unmasking and eliminating fake news is due also to the fact that many people interact in homogeneous digital environments impervious to differing perspectives and opinions. Disinformation thus thrives on the absence of healthy confrontation with other sources of information that could effectively challenge prejudices and generate constructive dialogue; instead, it risks turning people into unwilling accomplices in spreading biased and baseless ideas. The tragedy of disinformation is that it discredits others, presenting them as enemies, to the point of demonizing them and fomenting conflict. Fake news is a sign of intolerant and hypersensitive attitudes, and leads only to the spread of arrogance and hatred. That is the end result of untruth.
What is at stake is our greed. Fake news often goes viral, spreading so fast that it is hard to stop, not because of the sense of sharing that inspires the social media, but because it appeals to the insatiable greed so easily aroused in human beings. The economic and manipulative aims that feed disinformation are rooted in a thirst for power, a desire to possess and enjoy, which ultimately makes us victims of something much more tragic: the deceptive power of evil that moves from one lie to another in order to rob us of our interior freedom. That is why education for truth means teaching people how to discern, evaluate and understand our deepest desires and inclinations, lest we lose sight of what is good and yield to every temptation.
Freedom from falsehood and the search for relationship: these two ingredients cannot be lacking if our words and gestures are to be true, authentic, and trustworthy. To discern the truth, we need to discern everything that encourages communion and promotes goodness from whatever instead tends to isolate, divide, and oppose. Truth, therefore, is not really grasped when it is imposed from without as something impersonal, but only when it flows from free relationships between persons, from listening to one another. Nor can we ever stop seeking the truth, because falsehood can always creep in, even when we state things that are true. An impeccable argument can indeed rest on undeniable facts, but if it is used to hurt another and to discredit that person in the eyes of others, however correct it may appear, it is not truthful. We can recognize the truth of statements from their fruits: whether they provoke quarrels, foment division, encourage resignation; or, on the other hand, they promote informed and mature reflection leading to constructive dialogue and fruitful results.
What we found was both surprising and disturbing. False news traveled farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in every category of information, sometimes by an order of magnitude, and false political news traveled farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than any other type.
The issue of government oversight of the social media giants has been all over the news recently. Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress in March and April of 2018 and before the European Parliament in May. And in May the EU rolled out its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a tough, far-reaching regulatory framework for protecting consumer privacy. Grand conclusions about the right way to approach data privacy and antitrust are beyond the scope of this article. But regulators need to consult digital economy experts and tread carefully.
Second, misinformation is a moving target. As we develop designs to fight falsity, those interested in promoting it will adapt. Some of the most sophisticated falsehoods we studied were a category of story that we called mixed. Mixed stories contain information that is partially true and partially false. They hide falsity in a cloak of truth, which makes them harder to detect and more difficult for consumers to ignore.
